Apologies for posting this, but it seems the easiest way to get information.
I see that SGB has been closed down on Google Groups (and about time too) because of the spam. Is its content still available on other newsreaders?
Thanks,
Chris
I'll post this as a test message to both groups

OK, that seems to be working. I can see the post on both groups almost
immediately. This is via my ISP's news server which I think is probably
giganews being resold - ISP news servers often are.

Still here on eternal-september - where, incidentally, I see virtually
no spam (and I don't have kill rules other than for one or two posters).
I presume Google Groups doesn't have as good filters as e-s. (One of my
killrules is for a poster who persists in responding to the "girl" type
spams; I don't see them, but I did see his followups.)

1. Google Groups is not a newreader.

2. Since when did the people who run Google Groups care about spam?

3. I see negligible spam (mainly about horny girls) on
soc.genealogy.britain. It's easy to skip. Only Steve Hayes pays any
attention to it.

4. If you have a decent news server (I use news.individual.net (the
"German server")) most of the spam will never reach your computer.

5. Availability of particular groups depends on ghe news server, not on
the newreader -- which is just a program on your computer.

6. So far as news.individual.net is concerned soc.genealogy.britain is
as alive as it ever was.

If the spam that I was getting from Individual.net was only a residue I
dread to think what most of it was like. Maybe they eventually got
round to cleaning it up but I came to realise I already had a no worse
alternative in my ISP bundle so why pay the extra. Just killing each
new thread when it started was good enough because most spam (and all
Steve Hayes' ineffective responses) was in existing threads.

But what a pity that Google's only way out was to freeze the group
entirely rather than just freeze posting from it. Unless someone else
is archiving it our posting history stops at this point.
