Discussion:
1921?

It occurred to me the other day, that we're only a year away from 2021 -
at some point during which, presumably, the 1921 census will be
released.

I haven't heard a mention of it - anyone know? Will Ancestry and
FindMyPast both have it, or only one, or some third party we'll have to
pay even more to?

(I know one of them was destroyed by fire, but I think that was the 1931
one.)

Trying to remember how long it was before the previous ones became more
generally available?

That article states "will be published online by Findmypast in January
2022" FMP have exclusive early access.

They become publicly available at the beginning of 2022.

The England/Wales 1911 census was released early and available in full
on FMP in June 2009. For the 1911 census I think it took Ancestry a few
months to scan and make the summary books available? Their full census
transcription wasn't completed until summer 2012. They released the full
data county by county and over half was available by the end of 2011.

FamilySearch had their free limited 1911 information from FMP available
in June 2011

The Scotland 1911 census was available in April 2011.

I recall that the 1939 Register was originally exclusively on FMP but
subsequently became available on Ancestry.

For what it is worth, When the 1940 US census came out there was no
increase in the cost of an Ancestry subscription. However who knows
what they will do in with the 1950 US Census.

Memory not what it was, but FMP had exclusive rights to the 1911 for a
while. Given that they had expended a LOT of money, time and effort in
scanning and transcribing it, for a good while it was only available as
PPV, then when the exclusivity period was running out it was included
in the subscription. About that time, Ancestry was granted access and
created its own database. Am unsure when FS started its transcription
database but suspect it wa around the same time as Ancestry was
granted access.
I assume the same terms will apply to the 1921 census

Thanks.

That says "... will be published online by Findmypast in January 2022.

The project will see Findmypast capture digital images and transcribe
the records in a way that will enable family historians across the globe
to conduct meaningful searches of these important records when they are
opened for the very first time."

Which sounds as if it's all in the future.

I had been assuming that whoever had been "chosen" (best combination,
presumably, of bid plus how well they'd do it) would have had privileged
access in advance of the release date, so they could get on with the
scanning and transcribing, ready for the release date.

Or?

Look out for #1. Don't step in #2 either.

I thought they had been previously scanned prior to release date.

Seems crazy to have several different organisations all separately
scanning the records and so risking damage to them.

See my timeline for a more detail on the 1911 census release in an
earlier post.

FS (I assume you mean FamilySearch) uses a set of the FMP data without
the images. They did not do a separate transcription.

Yes I did mean Family Search and though they didn't do their own
transcript a link to their transcription result can usually be used in
public without contravening any rules various online genealogy forums
may have about publishing details of 'look ups' for the 1911 census.
Rootschat comes to mind.
