I wanted to access an old message on SGB but when I went to Google
Groups (which is no longer what it was last time I used it) I was
refused access to this group because it "has been identified as
containing spam, malware or other malicious content." (1)

Is there now no way to search for old messages to this group?

(1) Don't all newsgroups nowadays, to some extent?

There are other usenet archives - the one I had bookmarked I was
surprised to see still came up: http://al.howardknight.net/ . However,
it seems to require the message ID, so is no good for searching. (But if
you do know the MID ...)

Yes (though some are a lot worse than others!); however, the generic
nature of the above error message suggests it's sadly a result of
something being automated, which I fear means its not going to change
back. I have a similar problem with reporting spam emails: I want to
forward them to ***@phishtank.com and ***@phishing.gov.uk, but the
subcontractor my ISP (PlusNet) uses to handle email bounces them with a
similarly generic message - something like they contain "spam or virus".
(Yes, that's the whole point of my passing them on to those recipients!)

I can read and search it here

https://groups.google.com/g/soc.genealogy.benelux

and I can even find messages going back to 2003 and earlier.

Did you try to access it in another way, and if so, how?

Or do you have some add-on that blocks access to adult content?

https://soc.genealogy.britain.narkive.com goes back to 2003

The internet archive https://archive.org/download/usenet-soc has a 155Mb
zipped MBOX file archive from 23 Oct 2000-17 Jun 2013 (623 Mb/15.4M
lines unzipped)
https://archive.org/download/usenet-soc/soc.genealogy.britain.mbox.zip

Notepad++ can open it the mbox file. It is readable with a
mbox-viewer.exe (but I
stopped before it had loaded the whole file).

I run a usenet server. I'm asking my peers if anyone has a long
retention then I can see about importing the articles. It's a long
shot, but if so I could probably open up for read only access for free
or post access for a small donation to help offset the cost of
increasing disk space I'll likely need to hold it.

There was a concerted effort by some spammers to take over some
newsgroups. Nearly all the spam comes via GoogleGroups, and so many
people complained about this one that Google refused access to this
one. The spammers seem to have move3d to soc.genealogy.misc and a few
others.

I think Eternal September's s.g.b content goes back to 2010 at least, if
that's any help, you'll just need something like Thunderbird to access it.
