Hello, I am looking for the family of Thomas Hannam, a miner, who left
England in 1841 on the "Whitby" to go to New Zealand. He was followed
in 1842 by his wife, Mary, and their two children William & Sarah.
They travelled on the "Lloyds" I believe the family was from Yorkshire.

Yorkshire is a big county and at that time it was actually three
Ridings. If the family weren't from Yorkshire, you'll have a much
more difficult task finding them. England's population then far
exceeded New Zealand's.

When were the children born? If it was after 1 July 1837 you'll be
able to buy the birth certificate which will narrow your search
considerably.

If it was before that date, you'll need to look at sites such as
FreeREG or www.familyhistoryonline.net to see if there are any leads
there because you'll be into parish registers.

Do you have any death certificates or marriage certificates that give
you any leads?

When did the ship sail? Any help from the 1841 census?

If Mary, William and Sarah left the UK in 1842, then they might be
together in the 1841 census. The only obvious hits seem to be

HO107/753; Book: 21; Folio: 14; Page: 23
HO107/945; Book: 3; Folio: 9; Page: 9

The first of those is in Burnham Ovary, Norfolk, and has
Mary Hannam 25
Sarah Hannam 3
William Hannam 1 month
however, there's a John Hannam 25 living with them, rather than a
missing Thomas.

The second of those is in North Cheriton, Somerset, and has
Mary Hannam 35
Sarah Hannam 7
William Hannam 2
however, there's a Charles Hannam 35 living with them, rather than a
missing Thomas, and also three other children.

Is that because the ship was called the 'Whitby' ?
Or do you have something more definite?

Mary and the two children should be on the 1841 census.
If Thomas had left before the census was taken, it may be that
Mary and the children were staying with a relative.
Relationships aren't given on that census, so if she was staying
with a brother of Thomas that could look like a husband, wife and
children group at first sight. (can check in 1851 census to see if it was)

Do you know approximately when any of them were born?
Do you have any more information from birth certificates?
Do you know when Thomas and Mary married?

If you are sure about the Yorkshire bit, there's a marriage in Skipton
with possible bride Mary Pollard in Jun qtr 1841.
If that's them it could have been a second marriage for one ot them.

Best wishes
