Hello

I am trying to research my ancestors too. I have learned that my ancestor Richard Shortland served in the 51st regiment and have recently been given a photo, which I wonder, shows the regiment? What I know about the photo (and the photo too) can be seen at https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/04/unknown-soldiers/.

I believe that Richard Shortland was the brother of my great great great grandfather John Shortland and that he served in the 51st Regiment and was stationed in Tasmania, so I have started to think, maybe this is what the photo shows.

As young man, I believe Richard who was born around 1824, may have traveled to Australia approximately 1841 with the 51st regiment and subsequently made his life there – I think he went on to work as a dray proprietor and married a woman called Eliza Butts, they had 12 children and he is buried in Rookwood cemetery, Sydney (see https://tonilouiseabram.wordpress.com/2018/04/01/richard-shortland-and-eliza-shortland-nee-butts/).

I would love to learn more about the photo if this is possible.
Hello,
I am researching my ancestors who enlisted in the 51st Regiment of
Foot (formerly 2nd Yorkshire (West Riding) Regiment) and who came
with that Regiment to Tasmania, Australia in 1838.
I have been able to find some records of the 51st, and have
consulted various books about the military, but have been unable to
find out where the Regiment was between 1846 and 1850. This
information would hopefully allow me to pinpoint the place of death
of one of my ancestors.
I wondered, for example, if there is an appropriate mailing list to
which I could subscribe.
Any adavice will be very gratefully received.

Any advice gratefully received.

Sounds as if the photo has been checked by some knowledgeable people,
always worth that rather just comparing with reference books because
they might spot minor details that can be missed.

As you now know the regiment, it is worth checking where the regimental
museum is and if they or a local archive hold any records. When I first
started on my tree, I was lucky that my Great Grandfather's regimental
museum was not too far away and I was able to spend several hours going
through their library, picking up odd details though obviously TNA has
the main records.

More recently I found in the British Newspaper Archive that the local
paper had published eleven letters from him to family members from
Crimea and India. I learnt a lot from them and did a proper
transcription which I deposited with the regimental museum and a couple
of archives.
