My wife's ancestors came from Scotland.

I have been using www.freecen.org.uk to look for them in the census.

Dumb question: What does "Out of Country" mean?

I understand the obvious meaning, but it seems there are a lot of people
who are out of the country for that to be the real mean.

It describes where they were born not that they were away. There could
be a lot of people born in the same other country who are settled in
the same area, especially if e.g. it is a port (e.g. Chester) or a
place with a history of being inhabited by foreigners such as e.g.
Bute Town in Caerdydd, Glasgow or parts of the East End in London.

:-) In my case, Keith, it meant I was skiing and so not in possession of my development machine (I only take a small stone-age laptop with me when on
vacation).

Sorry, drifted into a different thread. Please ignore that remark folks. The term just happened to have been used in the previous thread
