Lancelot was my great grandfather. I think Fletcher was his brother. Parents were Isaac and Sarah (Sarah 1793-1871. I believe Lancelot came from Cockermouth England. My fathers name was Alexander.

Not sure who it was named after but when I saw the heading I wad
reminded of HMS MOUNSEY which saved hundreds of lives from the HMS
OTRANTO in WWI in what must be one of the greatest and bravest examples
of seamanship in the history of the Royal Navy.

The Fletchers were a significant 'clan' in West Cumberland - not the only Fletchers there but widespread around Cockermouth. I've written a little about the early ones of Mockerkin (a few miles from Cockermouth) here:

http://rumbutter.info/gen-cumb-cd-fam-mockerkin/fletcher-of-mockerkin

There's plenty on the web, much of it well researched.

Lancelot was a common name in the area, possibly because two early Lancelot Fletchers were vicars of Dean and Lamplugh.

The use of a surname as a forename was common in the area, at least among the more prosperous.

Fletcher Mounsey was baptised 11-02[February]-1838, son of John & Sarah. Residence at Fellside in Mosser in Cumberland.

John and Sarah had at least 10 children between 1818 and 1838, though the residence for the first two (John & Isaac) is given as High Mosser in Mosser. I don't know whether Fellside is in High Mosser.

Their son, Lancelot, was baptised 05-12-1830.

All information from Nev. Ramsden's 'BMD Index'. He always suggest that you check his data against the actual registers.

It would seem likely that Sarah was Sarah Hodgson. Sarah is aged 66 in the 1861 Census, with her birthplace given as Ennerdale. John Mounsey married a Sarah Hodgson in Ennerdale 02-02-1818 with the first child baptised 10-10-1818. A Sarah Hodgson was baptised 14-08-1795 in Ennerdale - parents Isaac

Sarah's parents are named as Isaac & Mary Hodgson. There was a marriage in Ennerdale 10-06-1775 between Isaac Hodgson and Mary Wilson.

John Mounsey was described as born in Distington in the 1851 Census, and Gilgarran in the 1861. That's not a problem. However, no baptism that I can see there. But there is a John Mounset baptised in the nearest port, Whitehaven, with only a mother Mary named 13-07-1794. This is perfectly consistent with, for instance, an illegitimate birth.

Excuse me. I see that the FamilySearch extract gives the mother as Mary Mounsey - a husband recently bereaved at sea perhaps, and she went to live at Distington?

From my little research, Fletcher Mounsey was married to Margaret Caruthers. They had 10 children. George was the first born in 1868. Then followed Hannah Mary, Fisher, Elizbeth Jane, Isabella, John, Ernest William, Betsey, Joseph Nicholas, and Sarah Hodgson.

I have a Mary MOUNSEY or Maunsey who married Mark ELLWOOD in Long
Marton, Westmorland in 1822.
