Hi all,

One of my ancestors changed his surname and married the woman who gave birth to his daughter. This daughter took the new surname of her father even though she was registered under his former name.

My cousin and I have been chasing this fellow for about 12 years until just recently when she put in the wife's surname in Birmingham and found the marriage.

We are in the process of purchasing the marriage certificate but was wondering if there was a source we could look at.

My ancestor was Alfred Frederick Esse (b 1868)who had a child with Annie Agnes Gough in 1890 but did not marry then. He married an Ethel Cannon (b 1875) and had two children with her in 1899 and 1900 then he promptly fell off the face of the earth until recently found with a new name.

Alfred also lied about his age by -10 years at the time of his marriage to Annie.

Any advice or information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Di

I do not understand your query or whether you are looking at the correct
people?

What was
a) the name of the woman who gave birth to his daughter the changes in
surname
b)the new surname of the daughter who took the surname of her father
even though she was registered under his former name?

There is no FreeBMD marriage record for an Annie Agnes Gough to an
Alfred Frederick so where did you get: Alfred also lied about his age by
-10 years at the time of his marriage to Annie
FreeBMD has an Annie Agnes Gough marrying either a Carter or a Pilgrim
Marriages Dec 1893
Carter John St. Saviour 1d 75
Gough Annie Agnes St. Saviour 1d 75
Pilgrim Charles St. Saviour 1d 75
and another Annie Agnes Gough marrying a Blundell or Pledge
Marriages Dec 1895
Blundell Richard George Birmingham 6d 78
Gough Annie Agnes Birmingham 6d 78
Pledge William Daniel Birmingham 6d 78

FreeBMD has the following:

Births Jun 1868 ESSE Alfred Brentford 3a 75

Marriages Mar 1898
CANNON Ethel Brentford 3a 136a
Esse Alfred Brentford 3a 136a

Births Jun 1899 Esse John Alfred Brentford 3a 103
Deaths Jun 1899 Esse John Alfred 0 Brentford 3a 65
