Hello there,
Can anyone please tell me the exact date of the death of the actress
Florence Saunders, who was a leading actress at London's Old Vic
Theatre till she was struck down. She lived in London, Paddington I
think, and was married to actor John Laurie from 1924 till her death.
I'm writing a book about John's life and would like to find out his
first wife's death date, but I don't want to have to spend the huge
amount of money i have seen asked for on geneology databases, as these
are generally long term subscriptions and I only need one date looked
up.
If anyone can assist I'd really appreciate it. If you can find the
death cert, I'd also like to know her age, and if it says, her date of
birth - which was in Chile.
Thanks to anyone who can assist.
All the best
Dave Homewood
Hi David - I'm interested to read of your project and book regarding John. Florence was my great aunt, although my father never met her but we did occasionally talk to John. I do have a copy of her obituary in The Times and there was a memorial leaflet printed for her funeral with tributes from fellow actors that was sold last year on ebay. Can you tel me more about your book on John as I have a great interest in him. Regards, Paul Saunders

From a quick internet search, It seems the 2003 e-mail address he gave
is still valid.
The book was still being written in 2009

You could also look at his pages

Homewood's book on Dad's Army.

According to Google, she was born 24 Jun 1890 at Valparaiso, Chile. If
she was "struck down" by something, it must have come on suddenly.
Wikipedia doesn't seem to have heard of her. There is an obituary in
the N.Y. Times, but it needs a subscription.

Being in Oz, I get shown an Aboriginal actress with the same name, instead.

HTH,

Doug.

The visible signs might have been sudden but the ailment could still
have been long term. In 1926 there were a lot more things that would
have finished you off in an apparent hurry which would have been
quickly and successfully treated now. In 1926 it could have been
influenza :- https://www.cabdirect.org/cabdirect/abstract/19282700404
"began in the late winter of 1925"
"reached its peak in the last week of March 1926"

The Yorkshire Evening Post says meningitis, but I find it surprising
that that newspaper should be alone amongst those on the BNA in giving a
cause of death.

The YEP was possibly the entry point for the news with the others not
fully reproducing the details.

No cause of death mentioned. No marriage, either.

New York Times
London, Jan24
Florence Saunders, Shakespearean actress, died here today. She was
born at Valparaiso, Chile and made a name as a leading member of the
"Old Vic" Shakespearean Company.

Miss Saunders, who was a teacher and then a stenographer, made her first
appearance on the stage at Olympia at Christmas 1911. Besides appearing
in Shakespeare's plays she took roles in various other dramas.

Miss Saunders played Lucrezia Violante in support of Mrs. Patrick
Campbell in "Madame Sand" at the Duke of York's Theatre, London, in 1920.

Probably you've found this by now yourself, after 15 years of
searching, but she was born on 24th June 1890 in Valparaiso, Chile.
There was a thriving British community in Valparaíso in 1890, so the
likelihood would be that she had British parents.
