On a 19th century document, in the old handwriting a man's location appears
to be Lime Kiln Hill, Limehouse, Middlesex.

Does anyone know what this refers to please?
Is it still identifiable as an address?

Limekiln Hill was renamed Three Colt Street in 1866. It is off
Commercial Road. At the northern end are Limehouse Town Hall and
Hawksmoor's parish church of St. Anne.

For a description of the area (and picture of the church), see:
http://www.thhol.freeserve.co.uk/limehouse.html

And for an interesting "virtual ramble", featuring the Dickens
connection: http://humwww.ucsc.edu/dickens/OMF/parker.html (towards
the end).

The street is on the edge of the totally transformed London Docklands,
but has, I think, escaped rebuilding.

Mail to the addresses given in the headers is no longer being
read. To mail me, substitute "clara.co.uk" for "freeuk.com".

A minor quibble, the 1830 map shows Three Colt St so named, the 1866 map
shows the part of the road between Three Colt St (from the junction of
Narrow St and Limehouse Causway) and Emmett St, around the end of Limekiln
Dock, as Limekiln Hill.
